The series "Das Boot" (The Boat) celebrated its world premiere in Studio 9 at the Bavaria Film Studios in Grünwald. The eight-part co-production by Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland and Sonar Entertainment is based on the Oscar-nominated cinema classic from the year 1981, which was also produced at the same studios located near Munich. The story begins in autumn of 1942, nine months after the original story in the film. The only element connecting the film and the series is the theme music composed by Klaus Doldinger, who was one of the 800 guests at the premiere to enjoy the first two episodes of the series.
The largest temporary "Dolby Atmos" installation ever used for a cinema premiere in Europe was set up for the event, which took place shortly before the first episode was aired on Sky. We opted for the surround sound system so that the audience could experience the series' impressive cinema sound in a studio of such a size. We realised the front-of-house PA system with five line arrays from the V series and ten SL-SUB bass loudspeakers from d&b audiotechnik. High-performance point source loudspeakers, also from the V series, were used for the sides and the rear wall, while 28 wide dispersion Y10P speakers were installed on the ceiling. The audio signals of the 48 channels, supplied by the surround system server, were digitally transmitted directly to the controllers via a Dante audio network through four d&b DS 10 bridges.
